Fan trained Cherry trees are used against a wall; you will need not less than 180 x 180cm’s for a fan tree. Please note we do not supply ready trained trees; this Kordia cherry is a young tree suitable for training yourself, in situ. Such trees usually settle to cropping within 2 or 3 seasons. Dessert Cherries will usually require a sunny south or west facing aspect; the cooking variety ‘Morello’ can be used to utilize a less promising North or East facing aspect.
Kordia is a new variety from the Czech republic which has shown good frost resistance and also the fruits ripen to a very dark virtual-black making it possibly the darkest of all the dessert cherries.It is an all round good performer – heavy cropping, good quality, excellent flavour and resists splitting because the lush foliage canopy helps protect the fruits from summer rain. This is a late ripening variety so extends the fresh Cherry season into August.
Kordia is well worth considering for your requirements; has shown some self-fertile tendencies but would be best with a pollinating partner; here are some suggested varieties:
